Your Questions about Botox: Answered

·

As we get older, collagen production slows and our skin loses elasticity. That’s why fine lines and wrinkles start to appear around the mouth, nose and on the forehead – because your skin is less “plump”. The more we use those tiny muscles around our eyes and mouth to show different expressions, the more likely it is that lines and furrows will appear over time. There are a number of ways to erase or minimize the appearance of these wrinkles, improving skin tone and texture, but Botox, a non-invasive injectable, is one of the most popular.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily reducing the contractions of those tiny muscles in the face. Because those muscles are no longer contracting, lines and wrinkles are softened and reduced. It’s injected into problem areas using an incredibly thin needle, and can be used between the brows, to soften harsh lines on the forehead, the corners of the mouth and even on wrinkles that develop on the neck.

Will I still be able to smile or frown?

When Botox is administered properly and the correct amount of product injected into the targeted muscles, it will simply soften lines and provide a slight “lift”. You’ll still be able to smile, frown, laugh, cry – it won’t prevent you from pulling a face! Botox will not make your skin feel numb, as it has no effect on the nerves that control and cause sensation.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Botox is administered with a very thin needle, which helps to reduce pain. Like any injection, some patients will experience a stinging sensation when the Botox is injected, but this is only very temporary and should subside soon after treatment. Anaesthetic isn’t usually required, although we do offer an anaesthetic cream if you’d prefer.

Does Botox have any side effects?

Side effects are usually only very minimal and tend to be isolated to the injection site. Some patients might experience slight redness, swelling or bruising, but this tends to subside within a day or two and can be treated easily with anti-inflammatory medication if necessary.

How long does Botox last?

Results always vary from patient to patient. Generally, though, results can last anywhere from three to four months.

When will I see results?

You’ll usually see results within a few days to a few weeks. Again, results vary from patient to patient, and although you might not see instant results, be assured – you’ll see them soon!

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment tends to take just ten minutes, which means that you can easily fit it into your lunch break at work. Botox is non-surgical, which means that there is no recovery time – you can go right back to your normal daily activities following treatment.
